The biggest concern we see with automating emails is how long it takes to set up & lose connection with your audience. Here’s the thing: automations save you time, make your email processes smoother, and help grow your business. This is especially useful for service providers like coaches, trainers, and online course creators who give a lot of time to serving their clients.

Wondering how to start with email automation? Don’t worry, you don’t have to figure it out alone. This blog will guide you through key steps to use email marketing automations effectively to grow your business.

Remember, any effective email automation strategy starts with knowing your audience like the back of your hand. From understanding how to segment your list to creating intentional content, we’ll share many tips to help you make the most of email automation. So, let’s dive in to improve your email campaigns and boost your business growth.

Automate Your Way to Success: Email Marketing Tips

1. Understanding Your Audience and Segmenting Your List

The first step for effective email marketing automation is to really understand who your audience is.When looking at your customer awareness journey, your list of subscribers are people who are solution aware. They understand they have a problem and they know you can help them in some way. This will help you tailor your content which we will get to below.

When it comes to segmenting your list there are a few ways you can do it. What Katie, business partner and I like to do is have leads automatically tagged based on action they take. For example if they download our freebie, we will tag it with “downloaded-freebie” This gives you the ability to divide your email list into smaller groups based on content they like, offers they’re interested in, and services/products they purchase.

By segmenting your list, you can customize your automated emails to connect better with different parts of your audience, leading to more people opening your emails, clicking on links, and making purchases.

2. Creating Relevant and Intentional Content

After you know your audience well and have segmented to your list, the next step is to write content that really speaks to your audience. Based on the actions your audience takes, you can craft emails that cater to their specific needs, content preferences, and interests. This will make your automated emails feel personal and authentic.

For example, after some downloads of our freebie we have an automated sequence that dives into the topics presented in the guide. This also gives us more value by solving problems they’re currently facing.

What is important to remember is personalization is key to engaging content. Some small ways you can do this is by having their first name appear such as “Hey Jessica” or having specific emails go out based on their purchases. You can also use custom fields on opt-in forms to get more information from your audience. An example of this is asking “what is your biggest struggle right now?”

Also, make sure to include clear calls to action (CTAs). Use simple language and guide them to exactly what you’d like them to do (i.e. book a call, fill out an application, etc). People thrive off of simple instruction!

3. Choosing the Right Email Automation Tools

There are many tools available to help you with email marketing automation. These tools can help you design emails, manage and segment your lists, and track how your campaigns are doing. It’s important to pick a tool that fits your goals, budget, and how comfortable you are using technology.

Many platforms have a free trial or even a free account. Be aware that the free accounts often have a subscriber limit. Look for a tool that is easy to use and offers a good selection of templates and customization options. It should also have in-depth  analytics to help you track your campaign’s success.

We personally recommend either ConvertKit or GoHighLevel. Some popular choices include Mailchimp, ActiveCampaign, and ConvertKit, but make sure to research to find the best one for your needs.

4. Optimizing How Often and When You Send Emails

In email marketing automation, how often and when you send emails is just as important as what you write. Sending too many emails too fast can make people unsubscribe, but sending too few can make them lose interest.

The way to find the right balance depends on:

  • What is your capacity right now?
  • Can you be consistent on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly email?
  • How does your audience like to be marketed to?

This will help you create an email marketing strategy that works for your lifestyle. We personally have our email automaton for our freebie sent out on a weekly basis. This helps train our audience to expect us in their inbox on that schedule.

I’d recommend trying our different days and times  to see what works best for you. That way you don’t feel overwhelmed & neither does your audience.

By watching your engagement metrics like open rates and click-through rates to figure out the best sending frequency..

5. Measuring Your Success and Making Improvements

The last step in effective email marketing automation is to track how well your campaigns are doing and keep improving them. Keep an eye on data like open rates, click rates, conversion rates, and the revenue from your emails.

We like to do this on a monthly basis, but you can also do quarterly too!

Use this data to see what’s working, spot any problems, and tweak your strategy. Be willing to try new things and make changes to keep your email marketing effective and fresh.
